Dean says they can appeal against move

The college council of the Madurai Medical College (MMC), which met on Monday, suspended 19 second-year MBBS students after an enquiry confirmed their involvement in the ragging of first-year students.

Addressing journalists, D. Maruthupandian, Dean, Madurai Medical College (MMC) and Government Rajaji Hospital, said that the 19 students, including some from Kerala and Rajasthan, would be suspended from the college for six months and barred from entering the hostel till their exams in February 2020.

The Dean said that no police complaint was made regarding the incident since no physical violence or abuse was reported.

“Since the examinations for second-year students got over on Thursday and all of them went home, the suspension order will be sent to their home. We are already in the process of intimating the parents of these students,” Dr. Maruthupandian said.

Acknowledging that the 19 students were not given an opportunity to explain themselves during the enquiry, he said they could appeal against the suspension if they felt they had been wrongly implicated.
