The stock market reversed course to end lower in the final hour of trade on Monday, tracking global cues, with the rupee hitting a record low and crude prices on the climb.
The broader NSE Nifty ended 0.8 per cent lower at 11,582.35, while the benchmark BSE Sensex closed down 0.9 per cent at 38,312.52.
Shares of consumer giants Hindustan Unilever and ITC, the top drags on the NSE Index, closed down 4.6 per cent and 2.1 per cent, respectively.
“It turned out to be a tricky day as a confluence of negative as well as positive macroeconomic data and negative global cues confounded investors and kept wider trends at bay. Most of the sectoral indices on the NSE closed in the red with the FMCG index losing over 2% in trade today. The metals and media indices witnessed marginal gains,” said Abhijeet Dey, Senior Fund Manager-Equities, BNP Paribas MF.
