A kite depicting the traditional sport “Kolida Katta” (cock fight) will be among the five kites Team Mangalore will display at the Dieppe International Kite Festival in France between September 8 and 16. This is the seventh successive year that the team will be participating in the festival held once two years.
The Team Manglore members — Artist Dinesh Holla and Satish B. Rao — will leave for France on September 5.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, convenor B. Sarvesh Rao said the team’s depiction of the rich tradition of the region, combined with messages on environment protection, attracted the organisers, who have been regularly inviting the team for the event.
Unlike other participants, the Team Mangalore prepares kites using Applique work wherein designs are cut and stitched together to form a kite.
While Mr. Holla was involved in design and colour combination, Mr. Satish Rao, Mr. Sarvesh Rao and Mr. Pranesh were involved in sticking different pieces and tying the tread for the kites.
Apart from the six-foot-wide Kolida Katta kite, Team Mangalore members are taking the three-dimensional Garuda, “Pushpakavimana”, Durga and Dampati kites for the festival.
Mr. Holla said he will also hold an exhibition of his line art paintings on the native tribe Halakki, who stay in the fringes of Western Ghats in Uttara Kannada district.
One among the paintings include on Padma Shri awardee tribal artiste Sukri Bommagouda, whose native singing needs to be preserved, he said.
Like in the earlier editions, Mr. Holla’s line art forms the poster of the festival this year too. In the poster based on the theme “monuments”, Mr. Holla said, he has shown the need for action by nations against global warming and protection of environment and water sources. This poster will be widely used by organisers on t-shirts, mugs and other publicity materials, Mr. Holla said.
Protection
During the festival, Mr. Holla said he will come out with a drawing on protection of wild life and natural water sources by using colours of all the 48 nations participating in the event. He will get signatures of participants of the festival on the painting and hand it over to the organisers, Mr. Holla said.
