7 schools chosen for Swachh Puraskar

An initiative to ensure all schools provide access to separate toilets for boys, girls

As many as seven schools from the Union Territory have been selected for Swachh Puraskar for the year 2017-18. A total of 52 schools have been selected from across the country for the honour.

The Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya initiative was launched in 2014 by the Union Government to ensure that all schools in India provide access to separate toilets for boys and girls.

Addressing a press conference here, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Monday said Puducherry district has been ranked number 1 whereas Karaikal district has been ranked number 3 at the national level.

The Government Primary School, Kunichampet, topped the list with 100 per cent marks.

The Government Primary School, Sendanatham, achieved 98.9 per cent and was ranked 3rd in the list. The other schools that found entry were Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, Government Primary School, Ecole Anglaise, Sri Sampourna Vidyalaya Day Boarding Residential School, Government Primary School, Agalangannu (Karaikal) and Government Primary School, Kottucherry (Karaikal).

Union Minister of Human Resource Development Prakash Javedhkar will hand over ₹50,000 in cash and a certificate to the headmistress and a student ambassador from the school at a function to be held in Delhi later this month .

He also announced ‘that the Teachers Day celebrations will be held at Villianur on September 5.

The government would honour 20 teachers for their professional commitments from various schools. They would be given a cash award of ₹ 10,000 and a certificate.
