A 28-year-old software engineer travelling on the Kacheguda Express from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught a 30-year-old bank employee for allegedly groping her. The incident took place around 4 a.m. on September 2.
The woman, who lives in Whitefield, was returning to the city after visiting Hyderabad on work.
She told the police that the she noticed the accused, Avinash Kumar Yedire, moving around the compartment suspiciously. He kept brushing past her and allegedly touched her inappropriately. She initially ignored him believing that it was accidental. However, when he returned to the compartment, and tried to grope her, she did not keep quiet.
When the train pulled into Hindupur station, she caught Yedire by his collar, alerted fellow passengers and handed him over to the Railway Protection Force.
Police said, “In her complaint, the woman said that the accused was walking from one compartment to another in the middle of the night and misbehaving with women sleeping in the lower berths. Yedire is a resident of Murugeshpalya and is employed in a bank.”
Yedire denied the accusations and told the police that he was travelling with his mother, who also came to his defence. “He said he was looking for the TTE to change the berth. He claimed that while he was in the compartment in which the woman had a berth, the ticket and his wallet slipped and fell. He touched the victim accidentally while picking them up,” police said.
Yedire was charged under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and remanded in judicial custody.
