PATNA: Police on Saturday arrested one Jyoti Ranjan (31) for duping a Lucknow girl living in the USA of around Rs 56 lakh ($80,000) during the last two years after befriending her on a matrimonial website.
Ranjan was arrested from his house on road number 9 of Friends’ Colony under the Rajeev Nagar police station area in Patna on the complaint of Parul Verma (34), a software engineer. A resident of Liberty Colony in Lucknow, she has been living in Oregon for several years.

SSP Manu Maharaaj said the woman travelled all the way to Patna from to lodge an FIR against Ranjan on June 6 this year. According to the FIR, they came to know each other in April 2016 through a matrimonial website. Ranjan told her he owned a software firm called ‘Intelliber Technologies Private Limited’ in Patna.

Police said Ranjan had registered the firm in the name of one Vibhuti Singh of road number 1 of Shankar Colony of North Jai Prakash Nagar in Patna in August 2015.

Rajeev Nagar police station SHO Rohan Kumar said after convincing the girl for marriage, Ranjan asked for money from her for various reasons, including payment of salary to his employees.

Quoting Ranjan, the SHO said he studied computer engineering from Tiruchirappalli and did MBA from Ranchi University. He even told the woman that cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni was his firm’s brand ambassador.

“Ranjan returned part of the money taken from the woman so that she did not suspect any foul play. With the money sent by her, he also went to Oregon to meet her several times,” the SHO said.

On July 10, Ranjan married another woman in Patna. “We were trying to track him for several weeks,” the SHO said, adding further investigations were on.
