MOHALI: It took
Mohali police nearly one-and-a-half months to register a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in a suspected drug overdose death of a 20-year-old youth. And, that too after family members of the victim repeatedly approached them and threatened to hold protests.
Police booked four persons, Sonu, Preet, Vipin and Simranjeet Kaur, under Section 304 of the IPC on Friday night. On July 19, Sachin Kumar, who was residing at Kumbra village in a rented accommodation with a roommate, brought dead to the Mohali civil hospital. At the time froth was oozing out from his mouth and nose. His viscera samples had been sent to Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). His family alleged Sachin died after his friends gave him a toxic substance.
“At first, no FIR was registered by cops even after we suspected drug overdose,” said Deepak Kumar, uncle of the victim. He said they have visited Kharar police station many a time seeking arrest of the accused. Sachin was taking IELTS (International English Language Testing System) classes in Mohali as he wanted to go abroad for studies.
Kumar said, “Earlier, we had planned to block roads, but cancelled the plan after assurance of cops. We had given a complaint to Mohali SSP to register a case against the accused on August 10.” Kumar said, “Sachin was not into drugs. He wanted to go abroad for studies and had come to Mohali seven months back. On July 19, we received a phone call from a hospital that Sachin was not well. After reaching at the hospital, Simranjeet Kaur (friend of one of the accused) told us that Sonu, Preet and Vipin had admitted Sachin to the hospital.” Before Simran could reach the hospital, the four fled. “Simran told us that the accused lived in a rented accommodation in Kharar,” said
