Man almost five times alcohol limit, double speed limit in school zone

Police say the stupidity of a man caught at almost double the speed limit and almost five times the legal alcohol limit in a school zone on Friday was staggering.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills, alos described the man's actions as "abhorrent".

“To drive at nearly double the speed limit and almost five times the legal alcohol limit is irresponsible and dangerous," he said.

“It’s particularly disappointing to see considering driving conditions were wet, and the area had a high amount of pedestrian movement with many children walking in the area after school.

Police said they spotted a 38-year-old Latham man driving a car at 76km/h in the 40km/h school zone on Hardwick Crescent, Holt, about 3.45pm.

"Police stopped the vehicle and returned a positive reading for alcohol," they said in a statement.

"The man was conveyed to Belconnen Police Station, where he underwent a breath analysis and recorded a reading of 0.247 – almost five times the legal limit (0.05)."

The man’s driver license was immediately suspended and he will be summonsed to appear before the court over a number of traffic offences, including drink driving.
