As an election commissioner, and before this a private citizen, it always puzzled me why so few people vote in a primary election but go out in considerably larger numbers in the November general election.

I like to think of the primary election as the primary election of primary importance, because it is at the primary election that the people to be voted on in the November election are chosen. Putting it another way: the people who vote only in the November general election are voting on the people chosen in the primary. For all those who vote in the primary, let’s hope those who do not vote like who we pick for them.
