Free voter ID card for those who lost it

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Kerala, Teeka Ram Meena on Friday said he had put off the publication of the integrated draft electoral roll for the 2019 general election till October 1.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) would issue voter identity card free of cost to citizens who lost them in floodwaters. Block-level officers (BLOs) will visit such families at their homes or relief camps and ease the process of procuring new cards.

Earlier, the CEO had set September 1 as the date for publishing the draft list.

Mr. Meena said individual citizens and political parties could peruse the draft list on September 1 and file their claims and objections, if any, to the tahsildar concerned between October 1, 2018, and November 15, 2018. Voters could make corrections, if any, to their name, age and address by filling out a form that they could download from the CEO’s website. The forms were also available in a hard format at taluk offices.

The CEO has set December 10 as the final date for disposal of claims and objections after due vetting. He would publish the final electoral roll on January 4, 2019.

Mr. Meena said citizens or political parties could file their appeals regarding the filing of claims and objections directly to the CEO before December 10, 2018.
