Janmashtami is the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth. According to legend, Vasudeva carried his newborn (Lord Krishna) across the Yamuna river to protect him from the wrath of his uncle King Kimsa on the night of his birth. Lord Krishna grew up in Gokul with his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda, he later came to be known as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Hindus celebrate his birth by fasting, singing and visiting Krishna temples for prayers.
