A 33-year-old man who allegedly raped his sister-in-law for over four years and extorted money from her has been arrested by the Virar police. The man’s brother, who is also the woman’s husband, was also arrested as the duo allegedly blackmailed the woman to withdraw the defamation case she had filed against her husband, if she wanted the rapes to stop.

The woman’s husband is a 43-year-old a government school teacher in Virar. His wife, 40, is also a teacher in a government school. The couple was estranged as the rape survivor had filed a defamation case against the husband. The woman lived separately with her 11-year-old son.

Police said that since 2014, the husband’s brother would visit the woman’s house after her son had left for school and rape her. Jayant Bajbale, deputy superintendent of police, Virar, said the man also videotaped the act and extorted Rs5 lakh from the woman by threatening to show it to her husband, and also threatened her to kill her son if she complained to the police.

When the survivor complained to her estranged husband about the crimes, he allegedly asked his brother to carry on with the act. He told the woman that if she wanted the rapes to stop, she must withdraw the defamation case she had filed against him, as it damaged his reputation in his school. But the survivor refused.

“The survivor complained to us and we registered a case under Section 376 (2) (rape), 323 (causing hurt), 384 (extortion), 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 498(a) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and we arrested the duo. We will produce them before the Vasai court on Saturday,” said Bajbale.

“We are also investigating the allegations made by the complainant against the two accused and will check the video clips of the illicit act,as per her allegations,” said Bajbale.
