Bhopal: The stray cattle on roads in the city as well as on highways often lead to road accidents which has time and again caused concern among the society and in bureaucracy. A youth was killed in an accident involving stray cattle in Katara on Wedneday. Many people have been injured or lost their lives in similar incidents.
Taking note of the issue, few city based youths, who are students of prestigious colleges, have taken an initiative which in they are tying radium enabled strips on the horns of such cattle to improve their visibility in order to avert accidents. So far they have placed radium strips on over 150 stray cattle.
Engineering, MBA, law and BHMS students are not also shelling out the money from their pockets but also bearing the risk of being attacked by the cattle while doing their bit for the cause. An MBA student of IIPER College Rakesh Kamble, a resident of Ayodhya Nagar said, “Animals have a tendency to seek dry spots and come on the roads in rains which leads to accidents. Poorly lighted street also compound the problem.”
“We have so far covered Raisen road and Khajuri kala road as the stray cattle are mostly found on highways. We have also sustained injuries while putting up radium strips on the horns of cattle,” said Akash Vishwakarma another student of IIPER.
Their friends Mohit Agnihotri, a student of engineering from civil branch and Palash Jain a law student too pooled in money for the cause cutting their expenses. “We use our pocket money for the purpose. It costs us around to mark Rs 25-30 one cattle,” said Aniruddh More, a student of BHMS and part of the initiative. “The radiums are a safe way to protect animals from dying in accidents on highways and it also is not harmful to their health, if tied on their horns,” said Dr. BP Yadav a veterinary doctor.
