Serena Williams: Everyone should be grateful to Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid

AP

Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid were cheered by the crowd at the U.S. Open on Friday night, and afterwards they were applauded by the winner of the night’s match, Serena Williams.

Williams, who defeated her older sister Venus Williams, said after the match that she admires the stance Kaepernick and Reid have taken on racial justice.

“I think every athlete, every human, and definitely every African American should be completely grateful and honored how Colin and Eric are doing so much more for the greater good, so to say,” Williams said. “They really use their platform in ways that is really unfathomable. I feel like they obviously have great respect from a lot of their peers, especially other athletes, people that really are looking for social change.”

Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem, and Reid was the first teammate to join him. Neither player has been able to find another NFL team since leaving the 49ers, and both are bringing a collusion case against the NFL.

Williams has faced her own criticism over the national anthem, from a different direction: She does stand for the anthem despite her Jehovah’s Witness faith. She’s been criticized by other Jehovah’s Witnesses, who say she is violating their religion’s teachings by standing for the anthem. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that standing for patriotic rituals is a form of idolatry, and they have sued for the right not to stand for the anthem.

  1. Well, my respect for her just dropped!!! It is odd that she stands for the Anthem, but I’m sure she knows how offended her fans would be, not to mention all the endorsements…..

  2. Of course, what has been lost in the protesters narrative of how terrible it is to live in the United States as a person of color is:

The irony that they are able to follow through with their actions in such a wonderful country without that same Government infringing on their rights.

  3. I’m confused.

Serena stands for the anthem, despite it violating her religious teachings (a reason I could accept), yet praises Kaepernick and Reid for kneeling.

If she truly believes in what the delusional duo are doing, why isn’t she doing likewise?

Obviously, she realizes that the anthem, while in uniform before the start of an athletic competition, is the wrong time and place to protest for any reason.

Her actions speak louder than her words.

  4. Every direct male ancestor of mine has served in the military going back to the Civil War. I served, and my son is a career man in the service. My daughter served too. Her husband did also. I have many uncles, nephews, and a nieve who served or served right now. Three members of our family died in the service (Civil War, WWII, Vietnam).

Every member of our family has full support for Kaepernick. Anyone who says you fight for the flag never served. In combat, you fight for your brothers alongside you. We all have believed in the ideals of free American democracy. Free democracy is not about blind obedience to authority. It is about thinking and speaking up. There is nothing more patriotic than speaking up because you sincerely believe that there is a way to improve our democratic system. I don’t agree with many people who speak up, but in every election I don’t agree with the people who vote for candidates running against the candidates I vote for. But I believe in and support everyone’s right to voice an opinion and vote. Other people disagree with my votes. That’s fine. That’s democracy.

It is bad that the national anthem has been included in sports. The national anthem isn’t played before movies or musicals or concerts. It isn’t played when stores open or when factories or offices start their days. Playing the anthem before sporting events is a way for people who never served to try to act holier than thou and wrap themselves in the service of others.

Leave the crazy flag waving worship to authoritarian regimes like North Korea.

  5. Then why isn’t she kneeling too? Oh yeah, I forgot she might lose endorsements. Do as I say not as I do…

Eric Reid should have a job in the NFL. He is a good player

He is average at best and he would have probably been on a team by now if he hadn’t overvalued himself and jumped the gun screaming Collusion because no team would sign him at the beginning of the Free Agency period

  7. Well the truth of the matter is Kaep is more martyr than hero. What gets lost in all of this is that Kaep had absolutely NO IDEA he’d be in this position when he first started the protest. I highly doubt he knew what a firestorm this would be and how he and his band of misfit followers would be branded as unpatriotic.
If he knew then what he knows now my money is on the protest never starting in the first place.
So to sit here and talk about how much he’s sacrificed and how unbelievably selfless this was is kind of laughable. This was a simple case of cause and effect.
The even crazier thing is that I think Kaep isn’t really the one driving this thing. I think it’s that racist girlfriend of his that has turned Kaep into some extremist.

  8. I don’t understand how millionaire African Americans can think that insulting the nation is beneficial to other African Americans who are getting killed and working hard in their daily lives.

Standing for the anthem doesn’t do anything to help them.
Snubbing your nose at the anthem doesn’t do anything to help them.

Try spending a weekend in south Chicago to see what real life struggles are going on.

  9. An nfl owner doesn’t have to hire anyone, no matter what there color, race, or religion is. Bottom line. If they don’t want you than buy your own team to play on.

The first part of your statement is probably the most frightening thing about humanity to me. I don’t mean to single you out, I think where you think you’re coming from is a place of perceived decency, and I think the same for those who “laid down their lives” or were in a position of risk, but… Why do people allow themselves to be brainwashed to believe that, without a government and a military, we would be overtaken by savages? I just don’t understand that. Or maybe people are so desperate for protection from the Boogie Man that they’re willing to sacrifice their naturally-intended unfiltered freedom to do literally anything within the bounds of nature and physics. We were never meant to be more than cavemen, everything we are today as a species is just all wrong for what nature intended. We aren’t supposed to be here sitting in air conditioning on our smartphones talking about football. Most of us are probably supposed to be dead already from disease, infection, starvation, interpersonal violence, or exposure to the elements. It’s scary, it’s not comfortable, but it’s what naturei tended. Our sole natural purpose is to be born and live long enough to reproduce. I’m very impressed by many of the things humans have done to alter their intended reality, and I’ve certainly benefitted as most of you have, but that doesn’t make it right in the grand scheme of nature. So there are now way too many of us on the planet, if we were deer they’d let us be hunted without limit. I’m sorry that one of those people is your beloved Aunt Lorraine, but that’s reality, that’s nature, your personal feelings mean nothing. This isn’t about what’s best, safest, or most comfortable for us, it’s about our species staying in its lane, and we have failed miserably at that, to the detriment of nature and also to ourselves, as much as the comforts blind us to it. I don’t think anyone is a bad person for feeling the way they do, I just wish people looked at the big picture and didn’t view life through the human lens, because it’s just not all about us, farrrrrrrrr from it.

    For what exactly?

Did you read the article or look at the pictures like a two year old. It clearly states why we,AMERICANS should be indebted to these men who sacrificed millions of dollars and popularity to shed light on racial inequality. For those of you STILL stating something in regard to it being unpatriotic or disrespecting soldiers etc etc you’re either too stupid to get the underlying issue or your racist ideology refuses to let you accept the underlying issue.

  12. The exact people who criticize Kaepernick, Reid for their stand by kneeling and perhaps Williams for what she said are the reasons Kaep and Reid need/needed to kneel! Have fun with the down votes…as I expect..after all, this is America and we know who and what America is, not the idea of America, but the people and the faux patriotic rhetoric.

  13. The outrage from a certain segment of people (and you know the segment) is appalling. Whites don’t care about issues that affect blacks and minority’s b/c they can’t relate. Imagine raising your children to tell them that their skin color will be the first thing that most cops or anyone for that matters sees and this is what you MUST do if you get pulled over or stopped by a cop. It’s a frightening reality for a parent that we have to live with but most of you on this site will never have to have that talk with you children. I salute you Kap and Ried and this is coming from a veteran who proudly served my county.

  14. Great post nflviewer!

It’s too bad those claiming to support freedom aren’t like you and actually support it even when you disagree with the message.

  15. Serena Williams of all people should appreciate this country that allowed her to be rewarded for her hard work and talent to take her to the top despite her skin color.
I don’t see many other countries churning out black tennis stars in the most snooty, elitist, white privileged sport on the planet.

  16. No site, no franchise, no person via : President, King, dictator etc has the power over freedom, liberty and justice fo anyone else

That’s what I served this country for & why we’re fighting for the same rights world-over

Whether I agree with Kaepernick. Muhammad Ali, David Duke, or any of you commentors is besides the point

Must along with other veterans who served & even died did so for us to agree or disagree

For those of you who discriminate even in thought alone, against anyone else’s opinion & them expressing it is disrespectimg not it YHST person, but the veteran’s service & sacrifices along with the very flag that represents them & their collective or individual
    expressions

Here’s the problem with folks like you that continue to launch insults at those of us who think these protests are unpatriotic. Actions elicits a reaction. It’s human nature. If someone kneels during the national anthem (for whatever reason) and I feel that it’s unbelievably disrespectful because my flag and my anthem mean more than any one person or group then this is MY reaction. You can’t take it away from me. You can’t talk around it. You can’t pontificate about constitutional rights and muddy the waters with semantics.
It’s simple. Don’t do anything but stand and pay your respects during the anthem.
You want to protest social inequality? Please, do it. I support you. I’ll stand by you. I also think we have a big problem.
Just don’t do it during the anthem because as I said—that is a symbol of the greatest country in the world and all that has gone into us becoming that.
Are we perfect? No. Are there really bad people here? Yes.
That’s just it though. It’s PEOPLE that are bad, racist, misogynist, bigots and it’s people who are bad profiling cops. It’s not the country that oppresses people of color. It’s individuals.
That’s what these knuckleheads have failed to realize. Protest people and institutions. Don’t protest during the anthem while we’re honoring our flag. The message got lost and because they were so stubborn and failed to realize the mistake they made they lost millions of patriots to join the cause.

  18. Do not speak for all African American’s… I do not share your views. Play Tennis Serena. Beat Simona Halep.

What platform do they have exactly? They used their platforms and are now free to watch the US Open all they want.

  19. Reid verbally attacked a group of NFL owners at a peace talks type meeting on social justice. In what world is he owed a job after that?

Kaepernick does not even want a job at this point. He is having too much fun being worshiped as a hero for having a tantrum as a backup QB.

  20. Wrapping yourself up in the flag does not make your view or your opinion more patriotic than the opinion of others. Yes we are all grateful to those men and women who have risked life and limb for our freedom. But that freedom also includes freedom of speech and freedom of expression and if takes the form of a taking a peaceful knee so let it me! Those players who take a knee are taking a knee for those Americans who have been mistreated and denied the freedom that our military men and women have fought and some have die for. Why do we fight any war? Isn’t to remain free and democratic? Freedom implies freedom to express you disdain for oppression in any form. My own big brother was a veteran and a member of the police force in his home town for 30 years and he would tell you there are always going to be denial of rights, mistreatment, etc, etc. but it is not a statement against our law enforcement members but a realization of abuse in any from of authoritarianism. You can wrap yourself up in the flag all you want but that doesn’t mean your right or have the last word on whether another American citizen has the right to express himself when they see and experience abuses in our system. That is what makes freedom and a democracy work. Stop parroting false claims of what is patriotic to make your point because doing so could not make your view less patriotic. It historically has been the way of demagogues and brutal dictators since the beginning of time. Freedom means freedom not what you or anyone else claims it is.

  21. They should put their time, energy & MONEY into the inner cities to educate and stop all the crime. Maybe they should spend some time in Chicago too. No they would rather rally against the police that put their lives on the line every day dealing with this crime. Does anyone see the news everyday?

  22. Modern day three stooges. They should have their own reality show that nobody would watch. If it’s so bad here, get out. Move to Cuba.

  23. “Don’t do anything but stand and pay your respects during the anthem.“
Why? Standing for a song (WRITTEN BY A KNOWN RACIST) does not make you any more American or care more about vets than the next person. I encourage you to research and dig a little deeper. I urge you to read “what to the slave is the 4th of July” by Fredrick Douglas. Then perhaps you might begin to understand the players rationale. Although some of the plights of AA have changed it’s merely shifted into other forms of injustice so again, Why?

My girlfriend has spiritual “family” who live in Cuba, and she lived down there herself about 8 years ago for nearly six months. It’s not as bad as America tells you it is. Everyone there was generally happy, they just lived a little more primitively because of the U.S. embargo. They didn’t hate Castro at all. America wants you to believe that anywhere that isn’t a capitalist society is bad, and that’s simply not true. The Cubans who left, at least in the opinions of the people my girlfriend spoke with, were the rich light skinned Cubans who didn’t want to be told they couldn’t be the upper class in a communist system, who by these same people’s accounts were often prejudiced toward the darker skinned Cubans who remained. There was violence in the Cuban Revolution, as with any revolution, and if you came out on the wrong end of it, of course your spin on it is going to be that you were right and they were wrong. I mean, in 1776 in my own home city, a bunch of American colonists who we’ve been taught to regard as “forefathers” decided they didn’t want to pay taxes if they couldn’t have a parliamentary representative. That was the brass tacks of it all. And they went and shot at their own (at the time) country’s military, and we have BBQs and shoot off fireworks every year to celebrate that, because, in OUR eyes, we were right and they were wrong. But if you were some innocent family member of a “brave British Redcoat” (since we’re all about military reverence, right?) who was killed while simply being patriotic to his own home country, that’s a horrific tragedy, in THEIR eyes. In this situation, Castro was the revolutionary and the old regime was the British monarchy. It’s all about perspective. Neither communism nor capitalism are inherently good or evil, it’s the way humans manage it that both can go off the rails. But if you take anything away from this, it should be to consider the source(s) of your information. It’s not “good for business” for America to have communism existing in the world, for whatever reason. Grow up and take off your diaper if you think it has a single thing to do with the well-being of Cubans. I can believe individuals may have benevolent intentions like that, however warped and misguided they may be from misinformation. But make no mistake about it, America’s not trying to save the helpless, this is 100% about money, power, and global political interests.

What I’m really saying in a nutshell is to not forget that everything you probably know about Cuba has gone through an American filter before reaching you, unless you’ve actually gone and lived there yourself. Nobody is starving, nobody is homeless, if you’re sick they take care of you, school is free, you just make $15 an hour to be the doctor in that system, but so what?

  26. Murderous police officers are now being charged with crimes, and some are being convicted. This was not the case when Kaep began his protest. Furthermore Kaeps legal action against the NFL almost certainly will create more change. Kaep has paid a heavy price, but his actions have, and will result in positive outcomes.

  27. I live in the Chicagoland area on the Indiana side, so i get all local Chicago news stations. The news broadcasts here could spend the entire time on air going through the list of people shot each day , without focusing on any other news that is taking place. So why dont these fake black activist bums come out this way and see reality , they wouldnt step foot in places around thia warzone around their own “people” for their lives. A bunch of fake pathetic attention seeking brainwashed buffoons who have no interest in helping “the cause” , they are all about themselves. Cant believe there are brainwashed black people out there falling for this garbage, but they still worship the great divider obama, who didnt do jack for any of his “people ” in Chicago, yet they still cant get it through their heads, too scared of being labeled an uncle tom above all else. Truly is pathetic

  28. My family has served our country from the Revolutionary War through Vietnam. I would hope they are looking upon this issue with pride, as they have protected the rights of those who chose unpopular expressions of dissent. I rarely, if ever; read about well to do athletes investing in urban business or mentoring programs.

  29. So many people sharing their opinions is great for the country. The fact that they also seem to insist that everybody share those opinions is not.

  30. edenprairieballer says:

This is what’s called a “false choice.” I’m grateful for those who lay down their lives. Today in DC, people celebrated the live of John McCain, who had more honor and dignity than that orange guy with bone spurs will ever possibly have.

I’m also grateful for patriots like Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, who choose to do what’s right, even when it’s not popular with most fans. History will remember them as men who showed more courage and character than Mr. Orange.

What truly unpatriotic is when members of law enforcement racially profile black men, and treat them with hostility and violence, even when no crime has been committed. That’s not what America stands for and it’s not something we should be proud of. The fact that it’s still a problem, and the incidents are well documented, is a stain on our nation. It’s definitely worth the attention these two men, and many other people, are calling to it.

  31. Watching all of the ranges of comments on this subject from the different members makes me realize the grudges the people that allow or cut comments have here. Strict facts get modded out while wild speculation and opinions get left in. There are good and bad posts and for sure the point of the players HAS gotten through. I just wonder how long it is going to go on? BTW this is my 3rd attempt to add my opinions on this story today.

  32. This country isn’t harmed or placed in danger by citizens that conduct non violent protests. The danger to our country is people who wear flag lapel pins, don’t have a clue about our Constitution, and demand false patriotism. We live in an era when the drunks at the end of the bar believe they are finally being heard.

  33. My family members have died in war… Their scarifice has nothing to do with a flag or a song. If you trivialize they service to the level of a song or flag, your SICK!!!
That flag and song stand for America, a country we are all immigrants in.(unless you’re Indian) So, to stand or not for a symbol of a country, your for father’s were not from doesn’t mean anything!!!
