CHANDIGARH: Permission for installing security gates has been denied by the UT chief architecture department while no action has been taken on the proposal to install CCTV cameras in various sectors. Resident welfare associations have been raising the issue on various platforms time and again.
According to residents’ bodies, they wanted to ensure the safety of their area in view of increase in crime. However, the UT chief architecture department denied permission for installation of security gates. Various proposals, including those from Sectors 38, 40 and Manimajra are still on hold.
Dilbagh Singh of
resident welfare association, Sector 40 said in a representation to the area councillor that CCTV cameras should be installed in view of increasing crime. He said they asked the councillor to utilise her ward funds for installation of cameras but so far, she has not even bothered to reply.
Residents of Sector 38 (west) are struggling to get a security wall constructed near HIG upper and lower flats. Even though they claimed this was part of the proposed plan for the sector, authorities have not initiated action to construct the wall.
Residents demanded security wall near the HIG upper and lower flats as the remaining sector has been cordoned off by a wall and barbed wire. This is a longstanding demand but no action has been taken, residents said.
Another proposal hanging fire is the two-year-old project of installation of CCTV cameras in Manimajra, which was recommended by the police after spike in cases of theft in the area. In 2016, the SHO conducted a survey in the area to ascertain what could be done to check crime.
After the survey, the SHO sent a communication to the resident welfare association MHC, Manimajra saying CCTV cameras are required to check such cases. In the communication, the department suggested that at least 150 CCTV cameras should be installed all over Manimajra.
RWA president Col Gursewak Singh of RWA-MHC, Manimajra said during a recent meeting with the MP, they were told that she received a letter from the police department asking who would manage the cameras. At this, the RWA assured them that they would take responsibility. But authorities are yet to take action.
Members of the Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh raised the issue in various meetings but in vain.
