Heavy rain lashes UP: 2 dead in Kasganj, marriage hall collapses in Agra

AGRA: Early morning hours of the first day of September reported heavy downpour in Uttar Pradesh, killing two elderly couple in Kasganj district and injuring four in Agra district.

Due to the rainfall, scores of streets in various districts were flooded due to choked nullahs causing inconvenience to students, teachers, patients, doctors, office goers and others.


According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bhadohi district recorded highest rainfall 209 mm on Saturday, followed by Mirzapur 114.2, Jhansi 81.1.

In western part of UP, Mainpuri recorded 73 mm highest amount of downpour, followed by Mathura 52, Firozabad 47.7, Etah 43, Kasganj 29, Hathras 22, Bijnor 18.3, Agra 16.4, Baghpat 10.8, Pilhibhit 10.7 and Aligarh 9.1. The IMD has predicted more rains in next couple of days.

Due to the downpour, in Kasganj’s Nagla Tiresat village of Amapur police jurisdiction, an elderly couple died after their house collapsed. Identified as Omprakash Rajput (60) and Bhudevi (55), the victims' bodies were sent for postmortem.


Later in the day, in Agra’s Bah police jurisdiction, a two-storey banquet hall collapsed, injuring four cooks, who were preparing sweets for a wedding ceremony. The victims were rushed to S N Medical College for first aid. According to local police, the heavy rain weakened the structure and the building collapsed like deck of cards.

Due to rain Mathura-Kasganj highway was blocked for several hours, a similar situation was reported from NH-2 close to Agra mandi in Sikandra police jurisdiction and in Tundla of Firozabad district.

In Kasganj, two-lane bitumen road connecting Amapur to district headquarter was partially washed off due to rain.

In Mathura, railway underpass near Bhuteswar and Mathura junction were heavily flooded, causing local residents to opt longer route of NH-2, which is pothole ridden due to under construction of flyovers. In Firozabad, district hospital lanes were flooded by stinking water of choked nullah, while in Mainpuri, pothole ridden city streets with rainfall caused inconvenience to local commuters.
