T.N. electorate goes down by 4 lakh voters

Stands at 5.82 crore as of August

The total voters in Tamil Nadu has declined by 4 lakh since January this year and stands at 5.82 crore, according to the draft electoral rolls of the special summary revision, to be published on Saturday.

During the continuous updation period (between January 11 and August 31 this year), a total of 1.82 lakh inclusions have been made and 5.78 lakh deletions have been made on account of deaths, shifting and duplicate entries, an official release stated.

As per the draft electoral rolls of special summary revision of electoral rolls of intensive nature, 2019, published on Friday, the total electorate in Tamil Nadu included 2.88 crore male voters, 2.94 crore female voters and 5,184 persons belonging to the third gender. Both male and female voters have gone down by two lakh since January 2018. Shozhinganallur Assembly constituency in Kancheepuram district has 6.07 lakh voters (3.02 lakh women and 73 from the third gender) — the highest in terms of numbers. Harbour Assembly Constituency in Chennai district has the lowest with 1.64 lakh voters, including 0.78 lakh women and 48 from the third gender.

“The general public are encouraged to check the draft rolls and if they have any grievances they can come to the camps we would be conducting till October 31. Once the issues are sorted out, the special summary revision of electoral rolls would be published in January next year,” Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said. They will be published on September 1 and can be accessed at www.elections.tn.gov.in.

Special campaigns are to be conducted on September 9 and 23 and October 7 and 14 (all Sundays) at the designated locations (generally the polling stations) for inclusions, deletions and corrections.

Mr. Sahoo also chaired a meeting of representatives of recognised national political parties Bahujan Samaj Party, BJP, Congress, CPI and CPI (M) and recognised regional parties such as AIADMK, DMK and DMDK.
