PATIALA: After arresting five persons following a shootout, Patiala Police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers. The cops said they also seized three weapons and one bullet from the possession of the accused — Inderjit Singh (21) of Achal village; Harinderpal Singh (25) of Patran; Parminder Singh (21) of Raisal village; Lovepreet Singh (20) of Mattar village in Haryana; and Sukhchain Singh (28) of Professor Colony in Patiala.
The cops said three accused were spotted carrying weapons by some PCR personnel on Patiala-Dhakla road. When the cops signaled them to stop, the accused opened fire.

“Several bullets were fired by the accused, for they wanted to flee. It was then that their motorcycle skidded, which gave us a window to overpower them,” the cops said.

“We immediately sent a wireless message to the headquarters following which two more were arrested from a PG accommodation in the city. During their checking, we confiscated three weapons — two .315 bore pistols and one .32 bore pistol — from their possession,” the cops said.

“During interrogations, they revealed that they were planning to carry out robberies in and around Patiala. Harinderpal, who was working with a chit fund company, had some links, which he wanted to exploit to make some money by carrying out robberies. The gang had recently enticed a Delhi-based businessman to invest money in properties in Patiala and were planning to rob him,” the police officials said.

The cops said that the vehicle that was used by the accused was also a stolen one. While Harinderpal is a graduate, Lovepreet is pursuing graduation from a local college. Inderjit is an undergraduate and Parminder is a school dropout.

“A case under sections 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against the accused at civil lines police station. “They are being interrogated to find out their involvement in other crimes,” the cops said.
