TRICHY: A 42-year-old woman died after she was buried under a mound of
soil while collecting soil from the edge of dry tank in Trichy on Saturday. The rescue men, however, saved another woman who was trapped waist-deep in the soil.
The incident happened when both the women were collecting soil from the village tank to build a toilet in their house. The deceased was identified as M Chellammal, 42, from Vadakattupatti village near Manapparai of Trichy district. She was survived by two sons and two daughters.
S Amsu, 42, from the same village was lucky to escape uninjured after being trapped waist-deep in the soil. The tank is situated 2.5 km from the village. The two were collecting the soil to load a
tractor owned by K Murugesan, 35, of the same village.
Chellammal’s body was at around 2 pm in the afternoon. A case has been registered by Thuvarankurichi police station under section 174 of the IPC of unnatural death. Further investigation is on.
According to police, local residents have been digging the area for long to collect soil, making the edges of the tank vulnerable to landslips. When contacted, Manapparai Thasildar Karunakaran refused to speak on the incident. However, he was present among the revenue officials who reached the spot along with police personnel.
