Kolkata: 10-year-old boy city’s first victim as dengue returns to sting

KOLKATA: A 10-year-old boy from Duttabad under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) died of dengue late on Thursday night, becoming the first victim of the deadly vector-borne virus from the city this year.

Narayan Shrestha—a Class IV student—died at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals 24 hours after he had been admitted in a critical state. The boy was treated at a Phoolbagan nursing home before being shifted to Apollo on Wednesday night.

In another suspected dengue death case, a 33-year-old woman from Baguiati died at the ID Hospital on Thursday night. Her family members claimed she died of dengue but neither the hospital nor the health department confirmed it.



Narayan’s death certificate mentions refractory shock, with multi-organ dysfunction, disseminated intravascular coagulation and the antecedent cause as severe dengue (NS1, IgM igG positive).

A resident of 113 Duttabad Road, the boy was initially treated at Divine Nursing Home in Phoolbgan where he had been admitted on Tuesday. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals on the night of Wednesday in critical condition. He died around 11.20 pm on Thursday at the hospital’s PICU.

“The boy was brought to the hospital in a very critical condition. All efforts were made to save him. But it was too late,” said a source in Apollo.

According to neighbours, the boy had been suffering from fever for about five days before being taken to hospital. He had even attended school on Saturday. He was being treated at home but his condition started deteriorating on Monday. His parents rushed Shrestha to the Phoolbagan hospital only after he started vomiting blood.

The BMC officials said that they were taking all measures to control dengue. Duttabad is notorious for this vector-borne disease. A 7-year-old boy from the locality had died of dengue last September at the BC Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences.

“Despite all our dengue control measures a death has occurred. This is the first dengue death in Bidhannagar. We will step up our vigilance. Hopefully, we will have fewer cases this year,” said Pranay Roy, MMIC health BMC.
