Nagpur: Continuing its drive against traffic violators, police on Saturday booked around 164 motorists who were riding vehicles without number plates, fancy plates, broken number plates and unclear number plates. Of them, 123 motorists were penalized for sporting unclear number plates while 41 for fancy number plates.
Traffic police were deployed in good numbers at various locations since morning. DCP (traffic) Raj Tilak Roushan monitored the drive.
Senior police officials from various traffic zones said the number of fatal accidents are increasing day by day and most people who lost their lives did not follow traffic rules and regulations. From January 1 to July 31 this year, the city traffic branch has penalized 2.73 lakh erring motorists.
Senior police inspectors also claimed that over the years, the city traffic’s road safety patrol has taken various awareness programmes across the city including schools and colleges to stress importance of following rules, including use of helmets.
“However, a large number of motorists don’t follow rules. Against this backdrop, the city traffic branch decided to conduct a drive targeting mainly two-wheeler riders,” said a senior PI.
The DCP said that the drive would be made more stringent in future. He also appealed to two-wheeler riders to wear a helmet.
