PANCHKULA: While awarding five-year term to two snatchers, the Panchkusla district and sessions judge Ritu Tagore said society has to be free from such offenders.
In her detailed order, which was made available on Friday, Judge Ritu Tagore said, “I have considered the pleas of convicts, their antecedents and nature of the crime committed by them. They do not deserve any sympathy. Society has to be free from such offenders so that a common man has sense of security and safety while moving about.”
Judge Ritu Tagore further said in her order, “The object of punishment is not only to punish the wrongdoer but also to give him a guiding lesson that he should not commit such offence(s) in future and is also to strike a warning note to others, who intend to take law in their own hands.”
The
Panchkula district and sessions judge Ritu Tagore on Wednesday awarded five-year term to two snatchers in a case that dates back to March 2017.
The accused Sonu, (29) and Ravi Kothari (26) were convicted by the court under sections 379A (
snatching), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 411 (Dishonestly receiving stolen property) of the
Indian Penal Code.
The two were arrested for targeting a doctor Prabdeep Sohi, a resident of Sector 7, Panchkula, on March 8, 2017. The accused had snatched a laptop and Rs 4,000 cash on knife point, when the doctor had reached his residence in Sector 7. Later, the FIR was registered at Sector 5 police station, Panchkula, and the accused were also arrested.
The accused had requested court for lenient view while awarding sentence. They had submitted that they belong to poor families and were the sole bread earners.
