3 alliances forged, last year's winner NSUI to fight alone in PU elections

The final list of candidates for the Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) elections, scheduled to be held on September 6, came out on Friday. Three alliances were formed between student parties on campus while the last year's winner National Students' Union of India (NSUI) decided to fight the elections alone.

In 2017, NSUI won the election in an alliance with Gandhi Group Students' Union (GGSU), Hindustan Students' Association (HSA), Himachal Students' Union (HIMSU), National Students' Organisation (NSO) and PUSU for Students (PFS).

On Friday, Students Organisation of India (SOI) announced alliance with Indian National Students Organisation (INSO), Himachal Students' Union (HIMSU), Indian Students' Association (ISA) and Himachal Pradesh Students' Union (HPSU) - Kuldeep Rawat group. Their presidential candidate is SOI's Iqbalpreet Prince.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) formed an alliance with Students Federation of Panjab University (SFPU). Their presidential candidate is ABVP's Ashish Rana.

Panjab University Students' Union (PUSU) formed an alliance with HPSU-Nishant Kaushal group. Their presidential candidate is PUSU's Ravinder Bir Singh.

Meanwhile, NSUI has decided to fight on all of the four posts, without an alliance. Their presidential candidate is Anuj Singh.

Students for Society (SFS) and Punjab Students Union (Lalkaar) are also fighting for the presidential post without any alliance. Kanupriya is SFS's presidential candidate while PSU (L)'s presidential candidate is Amandeep Singh.

One student from University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Ajayant, is fighting for all the four posts as an independent candidate.

Meanwhile, Indian Students’ Association (ISA) formed an alliance with the SOI for the PUCSC elections. Their leader Karanbir Randhawa had earlier left SOI for ISA. The alliance is being considered a homecoming of Randhawa while his supporters are feeling dejected.

The HPSU-Nishant Kaushal group was formed just before the elections by Kaushal who was the 2016 president from PUSU. On Friday, they announced an alliance with PUSU, and went back to the mother party.

NSUI’s pres nominee to move court

NSUI's nominee for PUCSC presidential post Sachin Galav’s nomination was rejected after the legal opinion came over the objections filed against his candidature. Galav questioned the objections filed straight with the dean students’ welfare (DSW) office and demanded copies of the same. “None of the objections had come in the prescribed time or had roll numbers on them. I will file a petition against the cancellation of my nomination,” he said. Galav along with three others of the party was booked for a clash with members of another faction in November 2017. The case is under trial.
