THANE:Wary of inviting the fury of citizens ahead of the 2019 polls, political parties want the traffic chaos in Thane city eased soon. The BJP and NCP have sought to hasten the
Kopri bridge widening by suggesting to the government to allow the Army to build it.
Only recently,
Shiv Sena leaders had inspected road repair works in Thane till late night, The Kopri bridge is slated for widening in two phases. The bridge is a vital link between Mumbai and Thane. The project has been delayed for the last several years and its cost has gone up from Rs 90 crore to Rs 257 crore over the last 15 years.
Thane resident Megha Parmar said that the ride to and fro remains chaotic thanks to the bottleneck at Kopri bridge. “There should be a permanent solution to the issue. Or netas who could be in for a surprise in the 2019 polls,” said Parmar. BJP corporator Manohar Dumbre said, “We want the
Indian Army to be given the task to construct [the bridge] which will be done in record time.” Dumbre recently met chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis with a similar demand. NCP has supported the demand. “We support the move to bring in the Army to build the bridge span which will ensure speedy work and assure a quality job,” said corporator Milind Patil.
