Bands in city to perform tomorrow

After lending their hand to the rescue and relief measures following the floods, the youth of the city are pitching in with their musical talents. On Sunday, independent music bands in the city will come together for ‘Do for Kerala,’ a benefit concert for the flood-affected.

Major benefit concerts held globally over the past decades have managed to raise millions for various causes. Some of these include the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, which had the likes of Beatles and Bob Dylan, singing together to raise close to $3 million for the newly formed war-torn nation, Bob Geldof’s Live Aid in 1985 which raised $38 million for alleviating poverty in Africa and the Live Earth concert in 2007 to fight climate change.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the call for ‘Do for Kerala’ was given by musician M.K. Vysakh, vocalist of the metal band ‘Dark Prophecy’ and his friend M.K. Balamohan.

“We need a lot of money to rebuild Kerala. If artists, performers and musicians can come together for this cause, it can provide smiles and money to many of the flood-affected,” read a call issued by Balamohan in his Facebook profile a few days back.

Soon, a group of cultural activists and musicians came together to make the idea a reality. The bands who would perform include ‘Collective Conscious’, who are known for their brand of experimental progressive metal, ‘Eettillam’, ‘Cut-a-vibe’, ‘Copper Planet’ and ‘Kadal The Band’. Also featuring will be a guest performance by Job Kurian, Rony George and Subin Pappachan.

₹150 per head

The concert is scheduled to be held at the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan from 3 p.m. on Sunday. The tickets are priced at ₹150 per head.

“All the money collected from the concert will go to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. We are expecting a crowd of at least 500,” says Balamohan.
