The Gujarat Government on Friday announced a cash reward of ₹1 crore to Sarita Gaekwad, who won a Gold Medal in Asian Games in 4X400 relay in Indonesia. Hailing from a remote village in tribal dominated Dangs district in South Gujarat, Sarita is a daughter of a farm labourer in the state’s most backward district.
“It’s a huge achievement for the state and the country. As her home state, Gujarat is proud of her feat. As part of the state’s policy, ₹1 crore reward will be given to her,” Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced on Friday.
On Thursday when news came that she won the Gold Medal, people in her small village burst crackers in celebrations while local legislator of Congress party immediately announced his one month salary as financial reward to her.
