PCMC loses 20 per cent water due to leakages

PUNE: Pimpri Chinchwad mayor Rahul Jadhav informed that the civic water supply department informed of 20 percent loss of water due to leakages in the distribution network. Jadhav gave this information to mediapersons while informing about the discussions held at the meeting to review the water supply situation in the city.

Jadhav said, "There has been very good rainfall in the catchment areas of Pavana dam in Maval taluka due to which the dam has been filled to 100 percent of its capacity. But still there are many areas in the city where the citizens are complaining of inadequate and low pressure water supply. As a result the review meeting was held with all the officials of the civic water supply department."

He said, "I took information about the amount of water lifted by the department from Ravet bund on Pavana river and how it is distributed to various parts of the city. instructions have been given to the civic officials about providing adequate water supply to all parts of the city, redress the grievances of the citizens and take such measures that there are no complaints about water supply."

He said that the civic water supply department has been directed to try to get permission from the state irrigation department for obtaining more water from Pavana dam from the city. This is necessary to give more water to water deficient areas and reduce the complaints.

He said that 18 villages were merged into PCMC limits in 1997. Urbanisation is occurring faster in most of these villages due to which the population has increased tremendously in past one decade. As a result the water supply demand has increased in these villages. So the water supply department has been directed to take steps to lay pipeline network in these areas considering the future increase in population.

The civic body had begun laying water pipeline from Pavana dam to Nigdi to bring the dam waters directly to the city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission(JNNURM) scheme. But the work had to be stopped in August 2011 on directives of state government in the aftermath of three farmers being killed in Maval police firing. There is need to complete this project to enable PCMC to reduce the losses due to percolation and evaporation which occurs when the water is released from Pavana dam into Pavana river and travels to Ravet. But the farmers of Maval taluka are opposed to this project. Reacting to it, Jadhav said, "Efforts are being made to have a meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to get his permission for restarting the project."
