A 45-year-old woman was killed and another person critically injured after a makeshift house they were sleeping in collapsed on Friday night in the heavy rain in Bilaspur area of Dankaur in Greater Noida.

According to police, Shakila Bibi and her husband Mohammad Qadir (48) were sleeping inside the one-room house in Sirajkhani mohalla of Bilaspur, Dankaur area of Greater Noida, when the roof collapsed around 10.30pm. The couple’s five-year-old daughter was also sleeping in the room with them.

“Qadir is a daily wage earner and he had constructed a makeshift house in Sirajkhani mohalla where he lived his family for the past two or three years. Around 10.30pm, when the family was sleeping, the roof and a wall collapsed. Their daughter, at the time of the incident, she had stepped out to get water. The couple was critically injured — the woman died while her husband is undergoing treatment,” Farmood Ali Pundir, station house officer, Dankaur police station, said.

According to police, a Dankaur police team took the victims to nearby Yatharta Hospital for immediate medical attention.

“Our police team reached the spot and rescued the couple from the debris. Shakila Bibi was declared dead on arrival by a team of doctors. Later, in the day, Qadir was shifted to Urban Hospital in Meerut. His condition remains critical,” Pundir said.

Qadir and Shakila have seven children of whom six are girls and one is a boy.

“Four of the girls had gone to a relative’s place a few days ago and, at the time of accident, the 20-year-old son and another daughter had gone out. We have informed them about the accident,” Pundir said.

Police have not lodged any case in the matter. “Qadir had built the house on his own and as we have not received a complaint yet, we have not lodged a case. The debris has been removed,” Pundir said.
