In a bid to improve sports activities in educational institutions, the State government has introduced new rules for recruitment of physical education staff in government engineering and polytechnic colleges across the State.

Accordingly, the director of physical education in government engineering colleges will be appointed through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). The qualification of candidates for the post of director of physical education will be post-graduation physical education with a consistent good academic record. The candidates should have represented the university or participated in inter-collegiate competitions or State/National championship.
It is mandatory that the candidates should have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) or other accredited examination in physical education conducted by the UGC. Lastly, the candidates should undergo physical fitness test conducted in accordance with the new UGC regulations. Soon, after the appointment, the candidates will be placed on probation for a total period of two years. The new rules for the appointment of director of physical education in government polytechnic colleges clearly states that the appointment should be made by direct recruitment through the TNPSC. No person shall be eligible for appointment to the post by direct recruitment, if he has completed or will turn 57 years as on July 1 of the year when the vacancy is notified.
The director of physical education in government engineering colleges and polytechnic colleges will be paid as per the UGC scales. According to the new rule, the candidates will also get an additional academic pay with the gross salary.
