Daimler chooses NavInfo as navigation mapping service for China

Daimler has chosen Beijing NavInfo Technology, a leading Chinese  mapping provider, as its exclusive navigation services supplier for China.

Under a seven-year pact, NavInfo will supply navigation mapping services as well as data products featured in Daimler's Advanced Driver Assistance System and equipped in all passenger vehicles the automaker will introduce in China from 2020 to 2024, NavInfo said this week.

NavInfo started providing mapping data for the Advanced Driver Assistance System in a small number of Mercedes-Benz cars in 2012.

Currently, it also supplies navigation mapping services to global automakers including BMW, Volkswagen Group, General Motors, Volvo, Toyota, Nissan and PSA Group in China, as well as several domestic automakers such as SAIC, Great Wall and Chery Automobile.

Earlier this year, NavInfo formed a partnership with Mobileye, the Intel-owned producer of obstacle detection software, to create high-definition maps by using data uploaded from vehicles equipped with Mobileye cameras and software.

Last year, the company joined with Chinese Internet giant Tencent and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC in a bid to purchase a 10 percent stake in mapmaker Here, based in Amsterdam, the world’s top producer of automotive navigation maps. But the bid was vetoed by U.S. authorities. Daimler, BMW and Audi are Here's three controlling shareholders.

NavInfo is headquartered in the Chinese capital of Beijing and listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange.
