Unidentified burglars made an unsuccessful attempt to break into the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society at Therkku Theru near Melur on Thursday night.
Valuables, including gold jewellery worth several lakhs, were intact, said Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range), Pradip Kumar.
The police said that the accused had come on a vehicle and parked it near the society building along the four-way. The thieves had snapped the power supply and damaged the closed-circuit television cameras.
They had broken open the front door lock. However, they had aborted their plan and fled the scene.
“A security personnel was posted at the society. But, we need to ascertain whether he was available at the work spot at the time of crime,” Mr. Pradip Kumar, who visited the scene of crime, said.
Though they had cut the power supply meant for the anti-burglary alarm, the burglars had not gone anywhere near the place where the alarm had been connected, he said. He added that the police had got some leads in the crime and special teams were following those clues to nab the criminals.
Madurai district police arrested a gang that was involved in a similar crime at Kottampatti few weeks ago. “We are also following the suspects indulging in the same modus operandi,” the DIG said.
The police said that the suspects had carried with them gas cutters to the spot.
The Melur police are investigating.
