Government helping every family construct toilets, he says

Srikakulam Collector K. Dhananjya Reddy on Thursday asked villagers to give equal importance to cleanliness indoors and outdoors, to lead a healthy and happy life.

Speaking at the Grama Darshini programme in Kanugulavanipeta village of the district, he said sanitation would not be a major problem if villagers cooperated with local officials and public representatives. Mr. Reddy said the programme was a great boon for villagers as they interacted with senior officials to resolve grievances.

Saying the government focused on sanitation to prevent spread of seasonal diseases like dengue, he sought cooperation of villagers to make the district open defecation free (ODF). “The government is helping every family construct toilets. Bills are also being cleared within no time for speedy construction of toilets under the ODF programme,” he added. Several villagers sought the construction of roads and drainage systems.

The programme incharge and District Industries Department General Manager B. Gopala Krishna told the Collector estimations were being made over the proposals of villagers and local public representatives. He said applications of those who had applied for the NTR housing scheme would be processed by Housing Department.

‘Switch to cash crops’

Earlier, officials urged villagers to grow cash crops instead of paddy to generate more income. They said the completion of many irrigation projects would ensure water for three crops in a year.
