A year after shutting down its print edition, the Village Voice will no longer be posting new stories, according to a report by Gothamist. "Due to, basically, realities, we're going to stop publishing Village Voice new material," owner Peter Barbey reportedly said in a phone call to the paper's staff. Barbey, who bought the paper three years ago, said half of the staff will remain on to "wind things down," and work to archive the newspaper's material online. Last August, the paper discontinued its print edition and laid off over a dozen employees. "I bought the Village Voice to save it. This isn't exactly how I thought it was going to end up. I'm still trying to save the Village Voice," Barbey said in the call, according to Gothamist.
