MANGALURU: Tense situation prevailed at a school premises near Eshwaramangala in Puttur on Wednesday after locals confined a teacher to the classroom for allegedly sending obscene messages to a girl student.
Police have identified the accused as Manjunath, an English teacher at a government school. He has been booked under the Pocso Act.

According to police, the accused had been sending lewd messages at night to a Class X student. The girl student had apparently given her grandfather’s phone number to the teacher and the latter had been texting to this number since a month. It is said the girl had been asking the teacher to refrain from sending sexual content. However, he did not heed.

A few days ago, the girl’s father happened to see the content sent by the teacher. The furious father brought the incident to the notice of the villagers who in turn arrived at the school in order to teach the teacher a lesson. Police said the villagers confined Manjunath to a classroom. Apprised of the situation, the police arrived at the school premises. Though Manjunath tried to shrug off the allegation and claimed innocence, the police said there was enough evidence against him.

Police have booked Manjunath under various sections of the Pocso Act.
