Health Tip: Keep Your Epileptic Child Safer

-- Parents of a child with epilepsy may be preoccupied with keeping the child safe during the school day.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these suggestions:

Develop an action plan so that teachers and school officials know what to do in the event of a seizure or similar emergency.
Contact the Epilepsy Foundation, which offers free training programs for school staff.
Talk with your child's school about offering education programs to help other students understand the disease.
Join a support group, which can help parents better understand issues such as driving, dating, medicines and handling stress.
