Applying for a driving licence in the Capital over the coming days will neither involve the long-drawn preparation of documentation, booking a prior appointment nor even standing in queue, said sources in the Delhi government.
Soon, Delhiites seeking to apply for the service, which is among several others being provided at the Capital’s transport offices, will be able to simply walk into their respective Regional Transport Office (RTO) or Motor Licensing Office (MLO) with original documentation and exit within minutes of making a guided, on-the-spot application for the service of their choice.
“Online applications are no longer required to be made for availing the facility. We are also in dialogue with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to further streamline the process and ensure that the only action needed at the end of the applicant is looking up and finding the facility they need to visit through their residential PIN code and walk in with original documents,” said a government source.
‘Major transformation’
As part of what government sources termed a “major infrastructural transformation” at RTOs and MLOs across the city, a step-by-step standard operating procedure is in the process of being put in place with a queueless token-based system at its core and the Mall Road MLO as the base model.
“At MLOs such as Mall Road, IP Depot and Raja Garden, to name a few, where the system in place entry has been made strictly controlled. The applicant is asked which service they are applying for and issued a token before being ushered into an air-conditioned waiting room where they wait their turn,” said a government source, adding that the system would be implemented at the remaining facilities in the days to come.
“When their number comes up, the applicant is led to a help desk where they are assisted with filling up the required paper work on the spot, then directed to a designated counter where their documentation is verified followed by the capturing of their biometric details. The process is streamlined in such a way that it takes between 10 to 15 minutes to get completed,” the source said.
The number of help desks at these facilities, the source said, was also in the process of being enhanced in sync with the footfall of applicants to positively impact the duration of the application process.
