Mumbai, Aug 31 (PTI) The NSE benchmark Nifty today ended almost flat, up 3.70 points at 11,680.50 due to negative global cues after US President Donald Trump stepped up his tough talks on trade.
Besides, investors' cautiousness ahead of June quarter GDP data led to subdued sentiment on domestic bourses.
Gains in pharma, tech, infra and PSU bank were offset by losses in energy, media, metal and financial stocks finally ending on a flat note as the rupee tumbled to a fresh life-time lows of Rs 71 per US dollar mark for the first time.
Overseas, European stocks fell following a downbeat session in Asia after US President Donald Trump stepped up his tough talk on trade. Asia shares declined as Wall Street ended its four-day winning streak in the last session, following a report that US President Donald Trump voiced his support for moving forward with more proposed tariffs.
The Nifty 50 index rose 3.70 points or 0.03 per cent to end at 11,680.50. The index rose 50.85 points, at the day's high of 11,727.65. The index fell 36.70 pts, at the day's low of 11,640.10.It saw an intra-day movement of about 87.55 points.
Broader market clocked decent gains. Among secondary barometers, the NSE midcap index rose 0.35 per cent and the NSE smallcap index also moved up 0.35 per cent.
On the sectoral front, pharma rose by 2.67 per cent followed by IT 1.81 per cent, infra 1.14 per cent, PSU bank 0.62 per cent, FMCG 0.21 per cent and auto 0.01 per cent.
While, energy slipped by 1.24 per cent, media 0.60 per cent, metal 0.60 per cent, private bank 0.25 per cent, finance service 0.21 per cent, bank 0.15 per cent and realty 0.07 per cent.
Major index gainers, Dr Reddy, TechM, Lupin, Tata Motors, HclTech, UPL, PowerGrid, Bajaj Auto and Sunpharma.
Losers were Yes Bank, Reliance, BajajFinSv, Baj Finance, Mahindra&Mahindra, Zeel, GAIL and Tata Steel.
The market breadth, indicating its overall health, remained gainers. On the NSE, 949 stocks advanced, 854 declined and 99 remained unchanged. Total securities that have hit their price bands were 223.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 42,825.68 crore from Rs 41,144.29 crore as on Thursday.
A total of 17,579.75 lakh shares changed hands in 1,33,46,616 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on NSE stood at Rs 1,57,30,917.99 crore. PTI ARR MKJ
