KANNUR: The LDF and the UDF joined hand at Karadka village panchayat in Kasaragod to oust the BJP, which had been ruling there for the last 18 years, and they wrested the power by forming a new alliance that is likely to have far reaching political implication in the district, where the BJP pins hope in the next Lok Sabha elections. CPM’s independent candidate Anasooya Rai was elected the new president on Thursday.

The election was held there after the UDF supported the no-confidence motion moved by the LDF earlier this month. The BJP has seven members in the 15-member panchayat whereas the LDF has five, including one independent. The UDF has three members, including one independent. Congress-backed independent member Vinodan Nambiar B K was elected vice-president, and both got 8 votes each. BJP candidates G Swapna and K Gopalakrishna, who contested for the posts of president and vice-president respectively, got seven votes each.

Earlier this month the LDF and the UDF had ousted the BJP from power in Enmakaje panchayat as well and there also they are likely to join hands to elect the new president.

The BJP alleged that this is an unholy nexus, and challenged them if they have the courage to contest the election independently after disbanding the council. But the CPM claimed that the stagnation in the BJP rule led to the no confidence motion, which ultimately led to their ouster.
