Rajasthan University students union polls today; Over 22k students to decide fate of 36 candidates

More than 22,000 students will vote in the Rajasthan University Student Union (RUSU) elections on Friday.

“Voting will be conducted between 8 am and 1 pm at 95 polling booths at the university and its affiliated colleges. Two different booths will be dedicated for voting for the post of research representative,” said Prof VV Singh, the chief electoral officer.

The maximum number of booths, 20, is at the Maharani College followed by Rajasthan College (17), Commerce College (15), Maharaja College (10), PG School of Commerce (7), PG School of Humanities (6), PG College of Social Science (4), Music Department (4), Centre for Computer Science and Information Technology (2), Law College-I (2), Law College-II (2), Five Year Law College (2), CCT Department (2), RA Podar College (1) and Department of Zoology (1).

There are six candidates for the post of president and eight each for the post of general secretary and joint-secretary. Nine candidates will fight for the post of vice-president and five for the post of research representative.

While the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) candidates are Rajpal Chaudhary (president) Dinesh Gared (general secretary), Minal Sharma (joint secretary) and Anuradha Meena (vice president), the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidates are Ranveer Singh Singhania (president), Chetan Yadav (general secretary), Sonam Gurjar (vice president) and Numan Khan (joint secretary).

ABVP has an edge over its rival NSUI after four rebel candidates from ABVP — Amit Badbadwal, Arun Sharma, Nitin Sharma and Vijendra Kumar Gurjar —withdrew their names from the post of president on Saturday and were seen actively campaigning for the union. When ABVP announced Rajpal Choudhary as its presidential candidate, the four turned rebel and filed their nomination as independents.

Meanwhile, despite rounds of unfruitful meetings, three NSUI rebels continue to be in the fray, giving an edge to ABVP and the independents. Denied ticket, NSUI rebels – Dushyant Singh, Mahesh Samota and Vinod Jhakhar — are contesting for the president’s post as independent candidates.
