Surat: A shopping centre on Ghod Dod Road was imposed fine of Rs20,000 for trimming trees planted by garden department of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Friday.
SMC had planted two trees on Ghod Dod Road near Rangila Shoppers Cooperative Society two years ago. The trees had grown up to 10 feet height. However, Rangila Shoppers Cooperative Society trimmed the two trees to 4 feet to ensure that it does not get hidden by them.

SMC garden department sent a notice to Rangila Shoppers Cooperative Society president Nitin Garg and later imposed a fine of Rs20,000 on the society under the provisions of Felling of Trees (Infliction of Punishment) Act.

S Gautam, garden superintendent, SMC, said, “The action has been taken to set an example. We can’t let trees to be chopped off or trimmed like this by anyone.”
