JAIPUR: Four labourers sleeping on the pavement under the Saras flyover near Gandhi Nagar railway station were injured when a rashly driven SUV ran over them on Thursday night.
The condition of one of the injured is critical while three others are battling for life at Jaipuria Hospital. The driver of the SUV was in an inebriated condition. He was thrashed by the public before he was handed over to the police. The accused has been identified as
Bharat Bhushan Meena of Malviya Nagar in the city.
According to police, the incident took place at 11pm when a Scorpio, which was coming from the Gandhi Nagar railway station side and going towards the Saras dairy plant, ran onto the pavement where the workers were sleeping.
Locals caught driver of SUV
“It was supposed take a left turn near the bridge. But went on straight to the pavement where at least eight labourers were sleeping. The vehicle hit them badly and ran over four of them,” said an eyewitness in the case.
Nearly15 minutes after the incident, a team from the Bajaj Nagar police station rushed to the spot and took all the injured to Jaipuria Hospital. The driver of the vehicle was caught immediately by the local people. “He was not able to speak and walk properly and seemed heavily drunk,” claimed the eyewitness who first informed the police control room.
Two of the injured were identified as Nainaram Banjara and Pappu Banjara. “The condition of one of them is critical as the lower part of his body has been badly injured. He is under observation of the emergency staff. He is in an unconscious state at the hospital,” said a senior officer of the accident (east) police station.
He was taken to the trauma unit of SMS Hospital along with the injured, police added. The medical examination of the accused will also being done. “Whether he was under the influence of alcohol or not can be ascertained only after the medical examination. He is in our custody,” said an officer.
