A group of students and teachers protested the raid conducted by the police at the residence of English and Foreign Languages University Professor K. Satyanarayana on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Prof. Satyanarayana, son-in-law of writer and revolutionary ideologue Varavara Rao, condemned the action of Maharashtra police at his campus home, terming them unconstitutional. He said the police came looking for his father-in-law but seized books and other material from his possession without cause.
“My academic work built over 20 years and other possessions were seized by the police. The searches happened even as the police was searching my father-in-law’s house with him being there,” he said adding that he is planning to move court in the matter.
The students of the university and teachers’ association came out in support of the academic by organising a protest gathering. The university administration did not grant permission for the gathering on the campus, forcing protesters to stage a demonstration outside the campus gate.
Students raised slogans criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government, demanding that Prof. Satyanarayana’s possessions be returned. They also demanded an apology for the alleged derogatory remarks made by the police during searches, as the professor claimed.
