MANGALURU: A man hailing from Gururpura allegedly hanged himself at his residence after slitting his girlfriend’s throat. The incident took place under the Bajpe police station limits on Wednesday. The woman is out of danger, police said.
Police have identified the man as Diwakar. He was 35.

According to the police, Diwakar was in a relationship with his colleague Mamata, 30. Both had separated from their spouses after which they got close to each other.

Police said Diwakar and his siblings were raised by their spinster aunt after their mother’s death. Diwakar lived with his aunt, his brother Keshav and the latter’s family at Bellooru in Gurupura.

Police said Diwakar used to invite Mamata over to his house occasionally. However, the duo often ended up fighting during such gatherings. Not willing to be a party to their fights any more, the aunt used to move to her niece’s house whenever Mamata was invited home.

Police said Mamata and Diwakar were at the latter’s house on Tuesday night too. As usual, they got into a fight but later went to sleep after Keshav intervened. Keshav also informed about the matter to their aunt, who promised to be back home early in the morning.

At around 4.15am on Wednesday, as the aunt was walking back home, she bumped into the couple who were walking towards Gurupura bridge. Diwakar had allegedly hatched a conspiracy to murder Mamata. It began raining and the aunt took shelter in an under-construction building enroute to her house. Diwakar slit Mamata’s throat and came back home even before his aunt could make it home.

After the aunt reached home, she was in for a shock, as she found Diwakar hanging in his room. A case has been registered at the Bajpe police station.

Meanwhile, police said Mamata is out of danger and is recuperating at the Government District Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.
