PATNA: Armed robbers on Thursday looted around Rs 52 lakh from a cash van and gunned down its guard in Bihar's Samastipur district.
The miscreants fled from the spot after opening several rounds of fire.
The deceased guard was identified as Bandhu Rai (40) who died at the spot after receiving at least two gunshot injuries.
Police sources said that everything happened in a flash of the moment and perhaps the criminals have accurate knowledge that huge amount of money was to be taken out from the office.
Samastipur SP Deepak Ranjan said that following the incident, a special investigating team (SIT) was formed to nab the criminals.
The SP also said that police were verifying the documents that exactly how much money was being transported. “At present, the LIC officials said that around Rs 52 lakh was looted,” he said.
Ranjan said that police had got strong clues about the criminal gang involved in the incident and the suspects would be arrested soon.
“People in the locality told police that the criminal had reached on a bike and their faces were open,” he said adding at least three to four round were fired at the spot which also hit the guard resulting his death.
“The entire money, filled inside a bag, was to be transported to a branch of Axis Bank which was around one kilometre from the spot. An armoured van was also at the entrance of the LIC office for transporting the money but as soon as the money was taken out of the gates, criminals reached the spot and opened fire indiscriminately,” he said.
Ranjan said that the district’s border was sealed immediately after the incident and CCTV footage of the incident was being scrutinized by police to further clues.
The SP said that further investigation was going on
in connection with the case.
