PATNA: The Munger police seized three
AK-47 rifles, 30 magazines and several parts of the weapon, such as pistons, springs, recoil springs, body covers and breach locks from one Imran Alam (42) in Jubli Well locality of Jamalpur town on Wednesday night.
Alam was carrying the consignment in a bag when he was intercepted by the police. A senior Bihar police officer said the
National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) have been informed about the recovery as the consignment was brought to the state from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.
“The NIA may take over the case as the seized assault rifles and its spare parts cannot be manufactured in a small gun factory,” sources said.
Munger SP (additional charge) Babu Ram said Alam told police that the consignment was brought to Jamalpur via train and handed over to him by another arms smuggler.
“Alam told police that he was supposed to hand over the consignment to another local arms smuggler, who was given the task to take the weapons to the actual customer who had paid Rs 15 lakh as advance for the consignment. The weapons were for use in Bihar,” the SP said, adding Alam has been involved in arms smuggling for more than 20 years.
“In 2000 also, Alam, a resident of Wardha village under the Mufassil police station area in the district, was sent to jail in connection with an arms smuggling case registered at Kotwali police station in Jamalpur,” the SP said.
Sources said two quick mobile constables spotted Alam after he came out of Jamalpur railway station after picking up the consignment.
