Out of the 1,008 schools under the General Education Department in the district, all except eight reopened on Wednesday after almost a fortnight-long extended Onam vacation forced by the unprecedented floods.
Among the schools were government, aided and unaided in the worst affected belt of Paravur and Aluva where cleaning works are yet to be completed. A school at Perumbavoor had a distribution centre of relief materials operating out of it, which is expected to be closed very shortly.

The Education Department is in the process of drawing up a list of flood-affected students who have lost all their schooling materials and need to be issued with fresh set of materials. “The list will be ready by Friday and the immediate priority will be distribution of textbooks which we have in surplus in the district. Many agencies have agreed to make available adequate notebooks, instruments boxes and school bags while the order for fresh uniforms will be placed with Handloom. We are confident of distributing all essential items needed for the smooth schooling of students in a week,” Mr. Santhosh said.
