Asian Games Day 12: India clinches 5 medals- 2 gold, 1 silver 2 bronze

It was another fantastic day for India with 5 Athletics medals including 2 golds pushing us higher our 2014 performances both in terms of golds & overall medals won. We have already set a record for silvers won at AsianGames exceeding the 19 from 1982

India today clinched five medals – two gold, one silver and two bronze in the on going 18th Asian Games. 4 x 400 metres women’s relay team today clinched gold medal to maintain a remarkable domination in this event in the continental showpiece. The Indian women’s quartet of Hima Das, M R Poovamma, Saritaben Gayakwad and Vismaya Velluva Koroth ran 3 minutes and 28.72 seconds to claim the gold.

In 4 x 400 metres men’s relay, Md Kunhu, Dharun Ayyasamy, Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Arokia Rajiv clinch silver with a timing of 3 minutes 1.85 seconds. Jinson Johnson won gold with a timing of 3 minutes 44.72 seconds in men’s 1500 metres final.

P U Chitra bagged bronze with a timing of 4 minutes 12.56 seconds in Women’s 1500 metres final. Seema Punia bagged a bronze in women’s discus throw.

In Table Tennis, Manika Batra beats Nanthana Komwong of Thailand 4-0 to enter pre-quarters in women’s singles.

In Men’s Hockey, Malaysia defeated defending champions India 7-6 via penalty shoot-off in the semifinals today. The match went into shoot-off and then sudden death after both teams were locked 2-2 after regulation 60 minutes.

India to play Pakistan in the bronze medal match on Saturday. Japan beat Pakistan 1-0 in the second semi-final.

The Women’s Hockey team will be desperate to end a long 36-year wait when it takes on Japan in the gold medal clash tomorrow.

Last edition’s bronze medallist India yesterday registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over China to enter the final of the Asian Games after 20 years.

India is currently placed 8th position in the medals tally with 13 Gold, 21 Silver and 25 Bronze. China maintains its massive lead at the top, with Japan second and South Korea third.
