Manipur names Das as head coach

Nagaland will have former Hyderabad cricketer Kanwaljit Singh as its head coach for the upcoming domestic season.

Kanwaljit, an off-spinner, has 20 years experience in the domestic circuit and is familiar with some of the Nagaland cricketers.

“He was our under-23 coach last year. He knows our players. It is essential for a coach to understand the Northeast culture and the boys. He will suit the role,” A. Rahman, joint secretary, Nagaland Cricket Association, told Sportstar on Thursday.

“It is an exciting assignment as they are the babies of First Class cricket. To nurture them is a great responsibility and I am going to enjoy the role,” said Kanwaljit, a veteran of 111 First Class games from the 1980s till early 2000.

Former India player Shiv Sunder Das, who coached Odisha in the last domestic season, will now take charge of Manipur as head coach. Manipur, known for its exploits in football and boxing, is one among nine cricket teams set for Ranji Trophy debut this year.

“It is a new challenge for me as they will be playing Ranji for the first time. I am quite excited about the new job,” said Das.
