KOLKATA: Entrusted with the job of repairing broken city roads in 72 hours, the KMC roads department on Tuesday called a ‘spot tender’ and allocated repair work of major roads among 12 enlisted contractors. A list of roads that needed immediate attention was informally handed over to the contractors on Wednesday.
“We had been given a 72-hour deadline to attend all major craters across the city. It was a mission impossible as we had to attend over 400 craters in such a short span. So the contractors had to be roped in. The list of roads had been handed over informally on Wednesday. A formal work order will be given on Thursday,” a KMC official said on Wednesday.

According to the list, the KMC roads department has asked the contractors to focus on battered stretches under the KMC jurisdiction and also on arterial roads that are maintained by state and central government agencies. Going by the list, commuters may finally expect some relief from bone-rattling rides on Beliaghata Main Road, CIT Road (Manicktala), APC Roy Road, Chittarajan Avenue, MG Road, Diamond Harbour Road (near Birla Mandir), Karl Marx Sarani, Taratala Road, DH Road (near Chowrasta and Sakherbazar), NSC Bose Road and stretches of EM Bypass.

The civic authorities have agreed to provide hot-mix material from the KMC-owned plants at Palmerbazar and Goragacha. “We have asked the officials in charge of the plant to ensure that the contractors get the best quality of hot-mix so that the repaired craters do not resurface,” said a KMC senior official.
