Mumbai: BMC Councillor Dr. Saida Khan of the the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) from Kurla, has suggested to construct discharge gates at rivers, lakes and creeks to directly flow the spilled water into the sea and avoid water accumulation on the roads and adjoining areas.
Kurala usually gets inundated with water and is one of the worst affected part of Mumbai region during heavy rainfall. There are Mithi, Dahisar, Vakola and Poisar rivers in Mumbai. Similarly, Powai and Vihar have two main lakes. Mahim, Gorai and Malad are the creeks.
Dr. Khan said that when the city receives incessant rains the levels of lakes, rivers and creeks increases and the water overflows in the adjoining areas. So by constructing the water discharge gates, the overflowing water from lakes, rivers and creeks can be channelised into the sea. And it will provide major relief from flooding problem to the citizens, especially people residing in the low-lying areas .
In the reply to the suggestion, the water department of BMC has said the site inspections were conducted by the officers from Maharashtra Engineering Research Institute (MERI), and Conceptual Design Organisation (CDO), the water advisory committees and a feasibility study has been carried out. Moreover, the officials has been asked to acquire technical data from hydraulic department of Konkan division. Only after conducting proper study and considering all aspects, the suggestion if proved beneficial will be taken forward.
